    Save up to 99% of your time in mapping validation

    Identifying semantic correspondences between different vocabularies has been recognized as a fundamental step towards achieving interoperability. Several manual and automatic techniques have been recently proposed. Fully manual approaches are very precise, but extremely costly. Conversely, automatic approaches tend to fail when domain specific background knowledge is needed. Consequently, they typically require a manual validation step. Yet, when the number of computed correspondences is very large, the validation phase can be very expensive. In order to reduce the problems above, we propose to compute the minimal set of correspondences, that we call the minimal mapping, which are sufficient to compute all the other ones. We show that by concentrating on such correspondences we can save up to 99% of the manual checks required for validation

    Extending a geo-catalogue with matching capabilities

    To achieve semantic interoperability, geo-spatial applications need to be equipped with tools able to understand user terminology that is typically different from the one enforced by standards. In this paper we summarize our experience in providing a semantic extension to the geo-catalogue of the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT) in Italy. The semantic extension is based on the adoption of the S-Match semantic matching tool and on the use of a specifically designed faceted ontology codifying domain specific knowledge. We also briefly report our experience in the integration of the ontology with the geo-spatial ontology GeoWordNet

    Diversity, especially manifested in language and knowledge, is a function of local goals, needs, competences, beliefs, culture, opinions and personal experience. The Living Knowledge project considers diversity as an asset rather than a problem. With the project, foundational ideas emerged from the synergic contribution of different disciplines, methodologies (with which many partners were previously unfamiliar) and technologies flowed in concrete diversity-aware applications such as the Future Predictor and the Media Content Analyser providing users with better structured information while coping with Web scale complexities. The key notions of diversity, fact, opinion and bias have been defined in relation to three methodologies: Media Content Analysis (MCA) which operates from a social sciences perspective; Multimodal Genre Analysis (MGA) which operates from a semiotic perspective and Facet Analysis (FA) which operates from a knowledge representation and organization perspective. A conceptual architecture that pulls all of them together has become the core of the tools for automatic extraction and the way they interact. In particular, the conceptual architecture has been implemented with the Media Content Analyser application. The scientific and technological results obtained are described in the following

    In questo articolo ci concentriamo sull’uso delle ontologie per l’organizzazione di oggetti, quali ad esempio foto, libri e pagine Web. Le ontologie leggere sono ontologie con una struttura gerarchica ad albero dove a ciascun nodo è associata un’etichetta in linguaggio naturale. Nelle ontologie leggere a faccette le etichette sono organizzate secondo modelli ben definiti, i quali catturano specifici aspetti della conoscenza, ovvero le faccette. A tal fine, ci basiamo sull’approccio Analitico-Sintetico, una ben radicata metodologia usata con successo per decenni in biblioteconomia, soprattutto in India, per la classificazione di libri. Le ontologie leggere a faccette hanno una struttura ben definita ed, in quanto tali, risultano più facili da creare, condividere tra gli utenti, e più appropriate in applicazioni semantiche, dove cioè viene automaticamente analizzato e sfruttato il significato ontologico dei termini

    Nella chirurgia sostitutiva protesica, ripercorrendo le tappe riabilitative e analizzandone le modalità e le tecniche, si evince che è possibile permettere al paziente il riapprendimento della corretta deambulazione con la riorganizzazione di tutte le fasi e della gestualità corrente per il reinserimento efficace nel contesto sociale di appartenenza. Oltre che dal punto di vista puramente motorio, il soggetto deve essere seguito anche sotto l’aspetto della psicomotricità e nel rispetto di importanti esigenze psicologiche. Viene sorretto, incoraggiato, ma soprattutto responsabilizzato sul fatto che per la ripresa completa si rende indispensabile la sua partecipazione attiva e la costanza dell’impegno. I riflessi pratici di una guarigione efficace e completa sono quindi estremamente proficui per il soggetto, il quale avverte in sé la capacità di ottemperare all’impegno del proprio recupero; seppur con stati d’ansia che insidiano il suo equilibrio, egli tenderà a proiettarsi nel suo futuro che quindi non apparirà denso di incognite. Non vi sarà commiserazione né emarginazione, ma voglia di vivere in una società che, anche se disumanizza i rapporti fra le differenti fasce di età, offre interessi e spazi per quanti sappiano organizzare la propria esistenza senza frustrazioni, remore e tentennamenti. La riabilitazione del protesizzato è un processo complesso perché non riguarda solamente il recupero della funzionalità della singola articolazione ma è rivolto a un riaddestramento globale del soggetto a una nuova modalità di vita relazionale. Il programma riabilitativo, quindi, deve essere personalizzato sul singolo e deve proporsi obiettivi differenti in base alle condizioni generali (anche cognitive). È necessario rendere possibile il raggiungimento di un livello di autosufficienza e autonomia motoria tale da permettere il ritorno alle normali attività di vita quotidiana

    Towards the Integration of Knowledge Organization Systems with the Linked Data Cloud

    In representing the shared view of all the people involved, building a Knowledge Organization System (KOS) from scratch is extremely costly, and it is therefore fundamental to reuse existing resources. This can be done by progressively extending the KOS with knowledge coming from similar KOS and by promoting interoperability among them. The linked data initiative is indeed fostering people to share and integrate their datasets into a giant network of interconnected resources. This enables different applications to interoperate and share their data. However, the integration should take into account the purpose of the datasets and make explicit the semantics. In fact, the difference in the purpose is reflected in the difference in the semantics. With this paper we (a) highlight the potential problems that may arise by not taking into account purpose and semantics, (b) make clear how the difference in the purpose is reflected in totally different semantics and (c) provide an algorithm to translate from one semantic into another as a preliminary step towards the integration of ontologies designed for different purposes. This will allow reusing the ontologies even in contexts different from those in which they were designed

    Computing minimal and redundant mappings between lightweight ontologies

    The minimal mapping between two lightweight ontologies contains that minimal subset of mapping elements such that all the others can be efficiently computed from them. They have clear advantages in visualization and user interaction since they are the minimal amount of information that needs to be dealt with. They make the work of the user much easier, faster and less error prone. Experiments on our proposed algorithm to compute them demonstrate a substantial improvement both in run-time and number of elements found
